  • What ChatGPT is and why is it useful
  • Tips, tools, and best practices for successfully using a ChatGPT.

Read on to stop wasting your time Googling something and still not getting an answer to your question.

What is a ChatGPT?

To answer this question, I asked ChatGPT to answer it itself. Here’s a brief explanation: “I am a large language model trained by OpenAI, designed to assist users in generating human-like text based on the input provided to me.” You may still not know exactly what a ChatGPT does after this answer. You can just go ahead and ask ChatGPT for a simpler definition. It will write back to you, “I am a computer program that is designed to understand and generate text… [The responses] are similar to those that a human might give.”

Why is this useful?

To answer this question, I also consulted ChatGPT. According to ChatGPT these are the most useful ways to use it:

  • Answering questions
  • Providing information
  • Have conversations about a wide range of topics
  • Explaining a concept
  • Translate a sentence
  • Giving information about a historical event
  • Have a general conversation

Tips/best practices

If you ask ChatGPT to give nutritional advice, you will receive a whole list of recommendations for a healthy and balanced diet. It gives you general advices that are based on facts from a professional point of view. You can also delve deeper by asking about its provided information.

What it can do

  • General information about nutrition and healthy eating habits.
    • Balanced diet
    • Nutrients that are good for your health
    • Tips for making healthier food choices
  • The role of different nutrients in the body
    • How to include them in a diet that meets your needs and supports your overall health

What it cannot do

If you have a medical condition such as diabetes, you may also be given some general advice, but you are also advised to work with your health team (e.g. a registered dietitian) to tailor this general advice to your individual needs. So, the limitations of ChatGPT are

  • To provide individualized information and support
  • To consider medical history and other relevant factors when making recommendations
  • To diagnose medical conditions
  • The recommendations are based not only on publications in reputable sources, but also on feedback from other ChatGPT users (which does not mean that this is generally bad but bear in mind that the response may be biased).

A comment on the “general recommendations”

The general recommendations are “general”, but they basically apply to almost everyone who wants to eat a healthy, balanced diet and has no special needs or illnesses. Of course, this can and will change over time, but it really works. The general advice still needs to be adapted to the specific situation, but the answers given are “true” and you get a better overview in the whole nutrition jungle. Not everyone has to eat the same way, but as different as the different foods are, the whole diet will be different, even if the principle remains the same.

Get started with ChatGPT today

In summary, ChatGPT is a good alternative to Google if you really want a general answer to a general question about your diet (or anything else) answered. But keep in mind that ChatGPT is not a substitute for a health care team. Nor can you change your lifestyle just by asking questions about how to do it. Gather the necessary information and try to form your own opinion or consult a nutritionist. Gather the information you need and try to make up your own mind about changing your lifestyle.
